Refusing to Be Defined by Limitations - Gopi Maran

Usually we write about some popular people who are already known to many people but whom we have never met before. But this time we are going to write about someone who isn’t as popular as others, but we have interacted with him on numerous occasions. His name is Gopi Maran.

This person, despite having a number of health issues, overcame the challenges and has achieved so many things. He is a self-taught programmer, a polyglot who can speak 28 languages, has run 8 marathons, and has visited 60+ countries.

We met him in a conference once as both the Fiolnir team and his company are in more or less the same business. Me and my team were very much impressed by him that we decided to meet him a few more times to know more about him. As you know, our philosophy is to inspire a generation of entrepreneurs, and when we meet someone who has struggled and achieved something, we ensure that everyone knows about them and gets inspired.

Overcoming HSAN and 30+ Surgeries

By just looking at him, you will never imagine his achievements. You know what they say: "Never judge a book by its cover." Due to his health issues, he looks like a guy who can collapse any time. He has a rare disorder called HSAN (Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy) which means he hurts himself without realising. He has scars, burn marks, and stitches throughout his body. He is blind in one eye and the other eye is stitched to be partially closed, so technically he can only see like 25% of what an average person can see. He had 30+ surgeries, lost all teeth, lost 4 toes, burnt his palm and part of his face, and had countless injuries. He used to spend 6 to 7 months in a year in hospitals. Most doctors said that he wouldn’t live past his teen years. Once a doctor even told him that they might have to amputate his foot.

This also affected his studies. He failed in 4th and 6th grade. He was considered as the most useless person by his relatives, his neighbours, his classmates, and teachers. For years, he himself also believed that he was useless. He was bullied throughout his school life.

Escaping Reality Through Books and Languages

The first turning point in his life was when his parents bought him many story books. He was not allowed to go out due to his condition. He started reading, and that was his escape from reality. He read stories from different parts of the world and imagined himself living there. That triggered his passion for travel and culture. To learn more about different cultures, he bought travel and language-related books. Soon he developed an interest in learning languages. That’s when he realised that he may not be the smartest person, but if he is passionate about something and works like 50 times more than others, he can achieve something.

Since then he has spent years learning languages. Till date he has studied many languages but can speak in 28 languages. Just to clarify, this doesn't mean he is fluent in all those languages. He is fluent in 12 languages and has working knowledge in other 16 languages. His goal is not to become fluent but to know enough to manage day to day life and understand the culture. He says, "Life is too short to spend years in learning one language and besides I will forget all of them if I don't use them every now and then." He still spends 2 hours everyday revising a language or learning a new one.

That’s when he decided that he didn’t want to be a useless guy anymore and decided to push in every area that he can. He asked his parents to buy a computer. He bought some programming-related books and taught himself programming.

The Self-Taught Developer & Early Struggles

Unfortunately, due to his eye condition, he was not able to focus on a computer screen for a long time. His parents were against him becoming a software developer. So he decided to study a bachelor’s in commerce. After his degree he wanted to travel around the world and work as a freelancer to fund his trips. But after 3 years he couldn’t succeed. So in 2012 (3 years after his graduation) he decided to do auditing (Chartered Accountant). But he was never interested in it. In the next 3 years, he focused more on learning programming and travelled a little.

His ultimate goal was to launch his own business. Between 2015 to 2019, his life was: working in a company for 6 to 8 months, saving money, traveling a little, launching a business, and repeating. None of his businesses succeeded initially, but he never gave up.

Building SaaS, Mozhi, le Buch & Launching Climb90

In 2020, he launched an e-commerce website selling designer jewellery, clothes, and wallets. Along with that, he started a YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@gopilanet). His business ran for only 6 months, but he ran his YouTube channel for another 4 years. In 2021, he got another job as a language specialist and in 2023, he moved to data science team in the same company. But this time he was determined to launch a successful business at any cost.

So for the next 5 years, he worked on an enterprise SaaS platform. He developed the product from scratch all by himself. In 2025, he left the job and worked full-time on the product. Along with it, he also developed 2 mobile applications: • le Buch: An app to learn anything where users can create their own course, flashcards, schedule, etc. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.endz.lebuch) • Mozhi: A language learning app targeted towards his native language (Tamil) users to learn French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and Italian (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.endz.mozhi).

He launched his business (Climb90) in February 2026, appointed his friend as CEO because he knew that he is weak in marketing and operations, and also because he wanted to focus entirely on the product instead of worrying about selling it.

Running Marathons & "I Want to See My Own Limit"

Not only that, he started running in 2019 at the age of 32. Since then he has run 8 marathons. He runs 10k every alternate day and a half marathon (21k) every Sunday.

He has also given speeches in some clubs and colleges in his hometown. When asked why he struggles so much instead of living a simple life, he said that he wants to see his own limit.

Entering the European Agri-Export Market

He is currently learning about export business. His goal is to use his language skills to enter European market to sell agri products from Tamil Nadu. Most sellers in India focus on exporting to English speaking countries. European market is difficult to enter due to language and also because of the compliances.

He is planning to use his skill and experience to enter that market to sell agri products. He wants to start with Moringa powder. He is taking his time to understand the entire process before entering the business.

Even now, he struggles every day. He just started his business which isn’t making much revenue yet, he has to be very careful about his health, can’t work like normal people, can’t eat like normal people-but still he keeps moving forward.
